~
A small 125 page book full of hard to find information compiled with the unselfish collaboration of Works teams, private entrants and others.
The most interesting section for anyone restoring racing cars are the four pages listing British Standard Colour Charts numbering, I.C.I. Colour numbering and descriptions issued by the leading motor and paint manufacturers. The book is not in colour however your all-over red period Ferrari will need ICI Paint reference P030-8385 Red, which should be sufficient but don't hold me responsible! More relevant for the wrecked D-type in question is that Ecurie Ecosse apparently used Ault & Wiborg Ltd Flag Metallic Blue.

Report and photographs by W.K. Henderson in Autosport 28th September
I understand that towards the end, Jock's deteriorating health caused him to lose some of his interest in the team and sadly in the autumn of 1962 aged 50 he died of a brain tumour. Jock's Chirnside home was The Cottage and he was born in Chirnside on 19th September 1911. In 1927 he became apprenticed into Motor Engineering, worked as Motor Mechanic and subsequently Sales Manager with S.M.T. Ltd. in Edinburgh. From the 1899 calendar advertisement below it can be seen that the business was spread south across the border to Cornhill-on-Tweed, during Jock's directorship the business once again flourished east across the border to Berwick upon Tweed.
Above is an extract from a column printed in the Berwick Advertiser on September 13th, the day after Jock McBain was interred within Chirnside Cemetery.
Whilst not the first time since this successful period, Border Reivers Racing with team principal Stuart Thorburn returned to competition in 2022. In a two-car line-up James Penrose raced in the BRSCC Formula Ford Festival and along with Mike Epps in the HSCC Walter Hayes Trophy.

At the end of 1963 a programme was aired on "The Story of Jim Clark", if my memory is correct broadcast from studios in Carlisle. The programme ended with final comments from those who knew Jim so well. This is the reminiscence from 1962 World Champion Graham Hill.
Well I think one outstanding moment that I remember very clearly was at the South African Grand Prix last year when, through no faulty of his own, he lost the championship to me. And he must have suffered bitter disappointment at that time and I think his sportsmanship on that occasion, and after that, I think is a great quality and certainly something that I remember.

Graham Hill led Jim Clark by 9 points going into the race, each vying for their first Driver's Championship.
Pole position Jim Clark #1 Type 25 Lotus-Climax 1 min. 29.3 sec. 98.20 m.p.h. (see Trophy below)
Winner Graham Hill BRM 2 hr. 8 min. 3.3 sec. averaging 93.58 m.p.h.
Fastest lap Jim Clark 1 min. 31.0 sec. 96.36 m.p.h. (see Trophy below)
Jim Clark led comfortably from pole until an oil leak on lap 63 forced him to retire handing the championship to Graham Hill.
Graham's best five points going into this race totalled 39 which included three wins and two second places. Jim on the other hand started with 30 from four finishes and a win here would have seen them on equal points with Jim taking the title on having four wins.
Grid position 9 Trevor Taylor Type 25 +3.4 sec.
Retired on lap 12 gearbox
2 Lotus-Climax Constructor's Championship points contributed by Innes Ireland but not calculated into best five.

The Lotus 25's driven by Jim had a fascinating chequered history in more sense than one. Opinions changed over time as you will read in these 2008 and two 2018 2018 articles. Above is Australian John Bowers in his car being assisted by Andy Middlehurst. Below is Nick Fennell's Lotus 25. Both cars raced at the 2014 Goodwood Revival in the Glover Trophy LINK

In May 1962 Colin Chapman's Type 23 sports car with the new Lotus-Ford Twin Cam made it's debut at the Nürburgring with Jim driving. Due to the stunning performance and road holding it became known as the "giant killer" capable of embarrassing far more powerful competitors. In the month previous the 1098cc Lotus 23 (23-S-2) of Jack Slater had appeared at Charterhall.

A Lotus Elite Super 95 was given to Jim in February 1962, in lieu of payment for his services as a works driver for Team Lotus. In 2018 it was auctioned by RM Sotheby's at Battersea Evolution on 5 September however the following day it was indicated as "Still for Sale". LINK LINK
