In the same race No.70 was Doug Niven in the Celtic Homes Ltd. Ford Escort 5700cc and also entered was Mick Hill from Nottingham in his Boss Capri 4700cc. It was from Mick Hill in 1976 Doug Niven bought the famous Trojan T101 development five-litre Beetle which he upgraded to a 7.5-litre V8. I can remember seeing the car sporting support from Spittal garage Peter Spellman and it was in this livery that the car appeared in the 2015 Duns street celebration below. It was featured in MN on May 1st 2013 when Andrew Jordan watched Doug drive the car at Croft before taking it out himself, the car had a five-litre Brodix V8 installed and belonged to Dave Taylor.

Innes Ireland drove his 3-litre Bentley at Charterhall on 23rd May 1953 and raced FEL1C in the British Eagle Trophy on 29th August 1966 at Brands Hatch where Jim Clark was also racing. I've wondered whether Jim drove a GT40 and sure enough he drove GT/108, seemingly one of only six roadster prototypes ever made, at Watkins Glen in 1965. You can see him on the Jim Clark Trust Tweet LINK.

Only one appearance at Croft on 13th August 1967 below. In Autosport's report of 18th August the car was confirmed to be ex-F. English, ex-John Macklin
Above in one of the five GT40s is Eric Liddell who raced at Charterhall where he was the last winner in 1964 of the B.M.R.C. Handicap Trophy driving the E-type Jaguar previously driven by Jackie Stewart. Below is Eric's son Robin at Bo'ness on 11th September 2022 with his Jensen Healey. Robin's father raced a Jenson Healey with Tom Sleigh's Jenscot Racing at Ingliston & Knockhill, and so not by any coincidence this was the centenary year of Jensen. Interestingly on S3 Ep1 of Bangers & Cash a lady called Christine, who worked at Jenscot in Edinburgh, turned up at Mathewsons where a red Jensen Healey was sold at auction for £6500. Tom Sleigh also entered a Jensen Healey at Doune on 17th September 1972.
James Nicoll Cuthbert (1931-2012) above in December 1963 lived at Darnick by Melrose. A superb driver himself, the religion of speed drew him to own and seriously race a variety of cars. His race team started with a Lotus Elan driven by Bill Dryden (below in Duns 2022), which was then joined by this gipsy red Ford GT40 P/1022 and eventually a Lola T in February 1969. A small feature in MotorSport July 1967 p626 also shows Eric above suited up with the GT40 and their two-tier liveried transporter. Graham Gauld in his book Scottish Motor Racing and Drivers gives a great insight into Nicoll's life. Early forays in his Healey Silverstone were in 1952 at Turnberry and 1953 at the M.G.C.C. Test Teasers meeting.

Continuing with the GT40 theme, Doug was greeting the GT101 and Classic Car Tours participants of the 2021 Ford GT Highland Tour at the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in mid July. Invited to drive one of these twin-turbo V6 engined magnificent pieces of machinery was Mark Dixon of Octane Magazine.
Chris Meek and his Princess Ita Escort with the De Tomaso Pantera behind him.
Chris Meek came to Charterhall on 3rd July 1960 with an Elva Courier and later on 21st June 1964 to Ouston with a 1650cc Ginetta GT C4. Jim Clark was home that weekend and agreed to start the Ouston Gold Cup and present the Trophy to the winner i.e. Roy Pierpoint with a 4.7-litre Attila.

In this easily found today magazine Mark Cole wrote " This car, built for Shell for a Monza fuel mileage run, has a 302-cu.-in. (4.9-litre) Ford Boss engine, giving 350 bhp in 'standard'-steel bottom end and four IDA Webers!-running gear at 6500 rpm. This reads around 170 mph maximum in fifth gear." The track test took place at Silverstone, the owner Chris Long was from Henley-on-Thames.

It appears (to me) that John Cooper's GT40 is P/1022 the ex Nicoll Cuthbert gipsy red car raced by Eric Liddell and bought from Tony Bancroft i.e. not Tony Bamford.
So perhaps Bryan Wingfield was aware of the presence of the ex Anthony Bamford P/1069 owned by Robert Danny who competed with Mark Finburgh and John Cooper at Brighton four weeks earlier.

Tony confirmed his past ownership of 1022 and also showed me a photograph of the car at this Croft meeting with race number 99.
At that time it was registered ALS 970C as shown below at vasmel.com. Unaware of his successful hill climb outings ( Doune included) in a diverse range of mounts including the McLaren M10B 400-22 (which I now realise I watched Bill Wood race at Croft) I've communicated over the years with Tony who restored the A.C. Ace Bristol which Ian Smith raced against Jim Clark at Full Sutton in 1958.

a book dedicated to GT40 #P/1022
An extraordinary auto biography I didn't expect to come across. One which has it's birth famously in the Ford vs Ferrari battle for supremacy at an international level and most powerfully showcased in the film Le Mans '66. The background leading to the initial purchase of P/1022 from Ford Advanced Vehicles Ltd. by Nicoll Cuthbert of Galashiels, his racing team management, main pilot Eric Liddell and the events entered are comprehensively recorded and illustrated. The car is shown at Croft on 7th October with race number 99 as mentioned earlier but also at Prescott Hill alongside olive green P/1072 2 HEV.

Meanwhile I'd been eagerly looking forward to seeing the ex-Carol Quiniou Lotus 23b at Knockhill which at long last happened on a Track Day on October 24th 2021. I knew the day before that if I turned up I should also see a GT40.
With nobody around this was my first sight of the Lotus in the paddock.

Also at Croft in 1973 Ford had demonstration runs with this De Tomaso Pantera. I'm hearing that John Kinmond's 351 Racing Cleveland V8 Pantera inherently has even more potential. Seen below at the June 2022 Sir Jackie Stewart Classic alongside his potent Rover SD1 Vitesse often racing at the Knockhill circuit this looks more aggressive than the sleek original Panther from which name in Italy it is derived. The Ford 5,763 cc 351 cu in four-barrel V8 produced 310 bhp in the USA and 330 bhp at 5,400 rpm in Europe. It is estimated that between 1971 and 1992 a total of 7,260 were manufactured but just like the panther is rarely seen. Famously, Elvis put two bullets into his Pantera in 1974 when it wouldn't start for him - he should have stuck to his day job!

The Jim Clark Trust announced an exclusive offer of a limited edition Jim Clark 50th Anniversary Single Malt Whisky 2018
The special edition 50th Anniversary whisky was launched at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed to celebrate the Trust being the Official Charity of the event. The Trust offered supporters first option to place orders in advance of Festival of Speed on a 'first-come first-served' basis.
The special edition single cask of 11 years old single malt whisky was selected for the occasion from Aultmore Distillery, Speyside, Scotland, by whisky specialists Morrison & MacKay in partnership with Simpsons Malt to celebrate the incredible achievements of one of Scotland’s and motorsport's greatest-ever sporting heroes.
There would only ever be 400 bottles of this special whisky available to Jim Clark fans and whisky collectors, with proceeds benefiting the Trust and supporting the plans for the new Jim Clark Museum. The first five bottles numbered 1, 25, 50, 63 and 65 were auctioned at the RAC Club, Pall Mall, in May 2018 during the Jim Clark 50th Anniversary Dinner with RAC Chairman Tom Purves and Sir Jackie Stewart.

Jim wrote that as a boy he drove his father's black Alvis at Edington Mains. My last known recorded whereabouts of the car was Caithness in February 1962. Perhaps if he had been alive today Jim may have been inclined to race along in an Alvis and give his tuppence ha'penny worth at the odd local committee meeting as did Cedric and George at Stowlangtoft in 1980.
