Along with fellow farmer Alec Calder and local garage owner Jock McBain, David was responsible for finding Winfield as a place near their home village of Chirnside where they could practice with their racing cars in preparation for taking part in English races. "The Story of the Winfield Joint Committee" by Bill Knox appeared in the Official Programme for the International Car Race Meeting at Charterhall on 11th October 1952 and is reproduced here LINK. David's racing profile can be found in the pages of the 500 Owners Association LINK.
David opened his private collection of motor racing paintings and memorabilia including a special room dedicated to Jim Clark in July 2004. In a converted granary and stable at Harelaw, it was a rare opportunity to see his fascinating and highly personal collection built up over nearly 70 years. Motor racing and flying were lifelong passions for David and his collection of almost seventy motor racing pictures included original oils, water-colours, signed and remarqued prints, limited editions and artist's proofs covering the pre and post-war periods. Among the artists said to be displayed were Dion Pears, Roy Nockolds, Michael Turner, Peter of Dalkeith and Terence Cuneo, famous for his mouse motif. Numerous prints were signed by leading drivers including Stirling Moss, Juan Fangio, Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, David Coulthard and Nikki Lauda. A 500cc Cooper similar to the one David raced at Charterhall was also on show.
