The Ex-Le Mans 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato sold on the 13th July 2018 for £ 10,081,500 inc. premium LINK
Driven by Jim in 1961 and 1962, 2 VEV was seriously damaged in 1962 during a crash at Spa and was replaced by a new car built at the factory to another specification, with the same registration number and incorporating many modifications. Another accident in 1993 except this time on the road returned the car to Works Service at the factory which returned it to 1962 specification.

Fifty five years plus is a lengthy time when trying to piece together information and this "Lotus Anglia" is no exception. The starting point has to be both Jim's book "Jim Clark At The Wheel" and his experiences given to the British journal for Ford owners, the Ford Times.
One story suggests this car was a Belgium Embassy sourced left hand drive 106E. Similarly it has been suggested that Chassis 106Exxxxx2 was registered BKC 213, colour orange and an "old-timer" in Belgium first registered 28th March 1962. Jim could have just meant it was the '61 winter without being specific. Whatever the dates and numbers are there is no doubt that the car existed for at the 2015 Jim Clark weekend I stood alongside a stranger who at Edington Mains declined an offer from Jim to drive the fast Anglia. I wish I had the sense to ask his name and perhaps likewise he later wished he'd accepted. I can only hope that the car does still exist and can be restored back to its wolf in sheep's clothing spec even though the original twin-cam and it's unique development bits would be hard to include. The 1963 advert below suggests that this is the later 1558cc engine which followed on from the prototype and approx 100 b.h.p. 1498cc unit fitted to early road going Elans and various Lotus cars for racing. There is no indication that the advertised LHD Anglia was the only and very same car driven by Jim and others but it is nice to think so for the record. Miles Wilkins in his book "Lotus Twin-Cam Engine" pins it down to 18th January 1962 for the Anglia being prepared, LHD so that the master cylinder would not interfere with the rear Weber. There is a bit more information on the car if you wish to buy the book which confirms the registration number 335 AXY as seen below at the works.

Once the world's largest grand prix collection, the Donington Museum closed on November 5th 2018. The history of the Donington Collection, where you will find the photograph below, can be read via this LINK to the Classic & Sports Car story by Lizzie Pope. The car is Jim's Lotus 21 (believed to be chassis #934) which was impounded for many years by the Italian authorities following the 1961 Italian GP in Monza on 10th September where Wolfgang von Trips was launched off the rear wheel of the Lotus and was killed, along with 15 spectators. Released it is said by the Italian authorities after seven years, Colin Chapman told Tom Wheatcroft of the Donington GP Collection that he could have it if he collected it from Italy.
Lotus 21 chassis #933, which was driven by Jim at Modena one week before the Italian GP, was sold in 2003 at the Goodwood Revival for £155,500 inc. premium. The history of this 1961 Innes Ireland United States Grand Prix-winning car can be read here LINK. It is interesting that when Lotus sold the car it came into the hands of Charterhall racer Ray Fielding of Forres who competed with favorable results at many hill climbs including Bo'ness and Rest-and-be-Thankful.
Lotus 21 Chassis #937 built for the 1961 season was taken to victory with Jim Clark by winning at Kyalami (Rand GP), Westmead (Natal GP), and East London (South Africa GP). On January 2nd 1962 Jim came second in the 5th Cape Grand Prix at Killarney and then this car was sold to Ernest Pieterse (4 July 1938 – 1 November 2017) who raced it up to 1964. The car was fairly recently sold by Hall & Hall.
from April 6th 1961
Despite what both local and national results indicate, it is evident that Jackie Stewart raced Barry Filer's Marcos this day.
On 17th June 2022 the Marcos Xylon GT arrived from Italy. Here with owner Matteo Panini at Charterhall before going on to be displayed with later cars driven by Jackie at the Sir Jackie Stewart Classic in aid of Race Against Dementia.

It is sixty one years since the car came to this race meeting brand new and Graham Gauld has published his story on the Marcos, Charterhall and the 2022 Sir Jackie Stewart Classic in aid of Race Against Dementia LINK.
Interestingly, Barry Filer's previous A.C. Ace-Bristol also had a Glasgow registration G 178. See 2nd June 1960.

#5 George Robinson's Lotus Eleven recently owned and raced consecutively by John Gray for 32 years. There was a nice archive page for the later 24th September event (also on this 1961 page) on the Lotus Racer website LINK. You will find photos of the car bearing #5 and these may be from this April event. John Gray is seen below at Copse Corner, Silverstone 2016 - Photo: Ben Watkins Photography and very nice it looks too! The car is reported to have been acquired by Scottish veteran Sandy Watson which he debuted at a Le Mans Classic.
On #6 J. Robinson's Britannia, this was John Tojeiro's first single seater design built in Hertfordshire which made little impression in the competitive FJ market. It is not known if the car actually arrived here.

If you've heard the name Redman it is most likely to be this Brian Redman. His third place at Ouston on June 18th 1961 behind Blumer and Wakefield is one of the earliest known successes in what proceeded to be nothing short of a legendary life behind the wheel of sports cars. At Rufforth on Whitsun Saturday in 1960 Brian came 2nd in the Saloon Cars Class A in a Mini-Minor (reported in Autosport 17th June) but he can also be found competing at Harewood Sprints and Hill Climbs in his Mini-Minor, Morgan Plus Four and Jaguar from 1959. This well used XK120 had a notable history before Brian bought it for selling mop heads during the week and running in competitions at weekends. LINK to "Two Days with a Racing Legend at the Simeone Museum".mop heads with it during the week and ran hillclimbs all around the UK on the weekends

#4 George Robinson's Lotus Eleven later owned and raced consecutively by John Gray for 32 years. There is a nice archive page for this event at Charterhall on the Lotus Racer website LINK. You will find photos of the car bearing #5 and these may be from an earlier event of 23rd April - also on this 1961 page. John Gray is seen below at Copse Corner, Silverstone 2016 - Photo: Ben Watkins Photography. The car is reported to have been acquired by Scottish veteran Sandy Watson which he debuted at a Le Mans Classic.
#1 1960 Lola-Climax Mk1 ex-Flying Officer The Marquis of Clydesdale at the 2022 Sir Jackie Stewart Classic in aid of Race Against Dementia. Entered and driven by Sir John Chisholm, this is Chassis BR-21 which has also been owned by Lord March and then sold by Bonhams.
At the Brands Hatch annual three clubs Trio Meeting on 1st July in '62 Lord Clydesdale won the 15 lap up to 1100 c.c. Sports Car race in his Lola-Climax.
My understanding from what I've read is that #15 Jack Wober's D-type is the 1957 Le Mans winning XKD606 registration RSF 301, sold to him in December 1960. Captain Ramsay would compete later in 1962 at the 20th May Snetterton Jaguar D.C. meeting where the next owner of the D-type R.F.G. Wrottesley would be racing.
It was great to watch the ex-Captain Ramsay E-type today in practice for the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy at the 2022 Goodwood Revival. Driven by Jon and Jack Minshaw it had race number 333.

This may have been the last time Jim raced in Scotland
Just as in 1960, Jim arrived here after racing the previous day in the Oulton Park Gold Cup. That event promised to be a repeat performance with Jim leading on the first lap however he eventually retired with a broken front suspension. I'm sure Jim would have shared the added interest in this race which was focused on Stirling Moss driving the Ferguson tractor company's P99, which after 60 laps became the first four-wheel drive car to win a Formula One race. Earlier for the British Grand Prix at Aintree during the Friday practice session Stirling lapped four seconds faster in the rain than any other car that day. When all other Formula One cars had switched to rear engines it was an extraordinary achievement for this front-engined car to win at Oulton Park as it was the sole attempt to design and build a Grand Prix car out of the Ferguson stable. I did a quick check only to disappointingly find it was not the traditionally grey Fergie. A skeleton view of the P99 appears in Autosport 7th July.
